A new patient tower at UCF Lake Nona Medical Center in Orlando is showing how much schedule prefabrication can save on healthcare projects. Crews installed 136 prefabricated exterior wall panels in just 11 days, according to Healthcare Facilities Today.

The project used StoPanel Impact ci and StoPanel Classic NExT ci systems, installed by Wal-Mark Contracting Group of Tampa for owners HCA Healthcare North Florida Division and UCF Academic Health. Installation took eight specialists, compared with an estimated 30 to 40 field workers for a conventional approach. The team chose panels because schedule certainty was essential after a late contract release left a firm deadline. Impact-rated panels also met Florida’s hurricane and wind-load requirements.

Why it matters

Healthcare owners need buildings delivered on time, and weather, labor and site congestion are the usual threats to that goal. Building wall panels in a controlled shop and setting them on site shrinks the time a building is open to the elements, reduces the number of workers on the jobsite and gives interior trades a dry building sooner.

Arizona has its own version of this challenge. Summer heat limits productive hours, and many medical projects are in tight, active campuses. Off-site methods, from prefabricated panels to headwalls and bathroom pods, are becoming more practical tools for keeping healthcare projects on schedule. It is a trend we are watching closely.
