JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa has completed a renovation that touches nearly every part of the property. The work covers 524 reimagined guestrooms and 51 updated suites, 16 of them newly added, plus more than 115,000 square feet of renovated meeting and event space and an upgraded pool complex. Updates to the market and retail area are planned for this fall.

The new room mix includes Family Bunk Bed Suites, 13 Junior Suites and an increase in Executive Suites from 15 to 20. At the top of the lineup are four Sonoran Starr Suites of 1,275 square feet, each with an 868 square foot private terrace and a premium telescope for stargazing.

Christy Thompson of Ellis Adams Group led the design, drawing on a desert palette of ochre, sage, rosemary, thyme and cactus green with patinated metals, natural hardwoods and artwork inspired by native pottery. “Our goal is for guests to arrive in awe and depart inspired,” said general manager Dean Callahan.

Why it matters

Renovating a working resort is a logistics exercise as much as a construction project. Rooms come offline in phases, guests are on site throughout, and finish quality has to be consistent across hundreds of keys. Converting standard rooms into new suite types also means reworking plumbing, electrical and life safety systems, not just finishes.

Investment like this is a strong signal for Arizona hospitality. Owners are putting capital into existing properties to stay competitive, and that creates steady work in renovations, conversions and amenity upgrades across the state.
